Course description

Composite-based structural equation modeling (SEM) methods have recently received considerable attention in a variety of disciplines, including marketing, strategic management, management information systems, and many more. A particularly prominent method in this field is partial least squares SEM (PLS-SEM), which aims at maximizing the explained variance of dependent constructs in the path model.

This course introduces students to the basics and advanced topics in PLS-SEM. After a short introduction to the fundamentals of SEM such as model conceptualization and evaluation, the course covers more advanced topics such as higher-order modeling, measurement invariance assessment, multigroup analysis, latent class analysis, and endogeneity. The course also exposes students to generalized structured component analysis (GSCA), which is another composite-based SEM method that has recently gained traction in the social sciences.

Students are expected to be familiar with the principles of structural equation modeling. Students will learn how to run various analyses using a real-world dataset and the SmartPLS 4 software, which will be provided.

The grading (pass/fail) consists of a group project (2-3 students) involving the estimation and interpretation of different models.
